The HEPA air filter, or High-Efficiency Particulate Air, is the gold standard of filters today. They were first developed during World War II by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission to filter radioactive particulate contaminations.
The HEPA air filter of today is much more efficient and is made of submicronic glass fibers. They use powerful fans to force air through a tight membrane. HEPA filters are commonly used in vacuum cleaners and stand alone units for residential use.
The biggest advantage of the HEPA is that they are very efficient down to 0.3 microns but they do require frequent filter changes.
The popular claim of 99.97% efficiency is based on particles down to 0.3 microns only. Depending on your environment, this may be all you require.
Unfortunately ...
Many of the really harmful particles are much smaller than that and if included in the calculation would result in a lower rating.
HEPA filters have a good reputation and are routinely recommended by doctors. As a result, they are in common use in homes and offices across the nation where they remove smoke, pet dander, dust and pollen.
The removal of these pollutants is important especially if you or your family suffer from allergies or asthma. This makes the HEPA filter a good first line of defense, but it is not the final answer in your war against indoor air pollution.
Residential Use Not the Best
The HEPA is more suited for specialized duties in nuclear, electronic, aerospace, pharmaceutical and medical fields.
They are very efficient when used in the proper environment, but as home air purification systems, they fall short of expectations. There is a better solution.
Advantages: allergens are captured; not being released into the air once trapped. Very effective down to .03 microns Disadvantages: Air must travel through the filter to be cleaned. Powerful fan required resulting in energy cost and noise level. Does not eliminate chemical fumes, gases, cigarette smoke, or odors.
Consider purchasing a
HEPA air filter / Carbon Filter
combination to address chemical fumes, gases, cigarette smoke, or odors.
Want a Better Idea? - Purchase a HEPA filter that is more than just a filter. Purchase a HEPA filter that doubles as an Air Purifier.
